Severe weather has completely hijacked Sunday's action at the Australian Grand Prix, with Motorsport.com Italia reporting that relentless rain falling since the night has thrown the schedule into chaos. The true enemy out on the asphalt, however, isn't just the water pooling across the venue; it is the dangerously poor visibility.
That thick wall of gloom has grounded the safety helicopters entirely. Without them in the air, the mandatory protocol for rapid hospital transport in the event of a severe crash simply cannot be met, rendering the racing too high a risk regardless of the track conditions itself.
While we await conditions to improve, the new provisional pitlane opening time for the MotoGP Grand Prix at the Red Bull Grand Prix of Australia is now set for 16:00 local time,
While the circuit is certainly wet, it is the lack of medical airlift capability that has tied the hands of the organizers. The morning began with delays as the scheduled 9:40 local time warm-up was scrapped following an initial announcement at 9:00 local time.
As the hours dragged on without a break in the weather, the situation only deteriorated further. By 14:00 local time—which translates to 4:00 in Italy and the exact moment the premier class race was supposed to get underway—the decision was made to officially cancel both the Moto3 and Moto2 races entirely.
All remaining hopes and resources have been funneled into saving the main MotoGP event, though its fate is still hanging by a thread. A fresh update is scheduled for 16:00 local time, which will be 6:00 in Italy.
