Here is the news we have been waiting for regarding the future development ladder, as the FIA Formula 2 Championship and FIA Formula 3 Championship have officially locked in their calendars for the 2027 campaign. Both junior single-seater categories will continue their vital mission of supporting Formula 1 throughout the season, with F2 locked in for 14 rounds while Formula 3 will contest 10 rounds alongside the grand prix circus.
The scheduling brings some wild new destinations and exciting returns for the upcoming year. F2 is heading back to Montreal following its debut appearance on the Canadian schedule in 2026, while Mexico City joins the roster for the very first time. On top of that, Istanbul enters the fold to stage a race for the absolute first time in the FIA Formula 2 era. Meanwhile, Formula 3 will make its maiden visits to Jeddah and Montreal, with its season finale taking place at that same new venue in Istanbul.
I’m very excited to add three new venues in a financially sustainable way, with the return of Montreal following its surprise addition in 2026 and the first appearance of Istanbul and Mexico City,
Action kicks off early for both championships in March with rounds in Bahrain and Jeddah, before the freight moves on to Melbourne in April and Montreal in May. June brings the iconic test of Monaco, followed immediately by back-to-back rounds at Silverstone and Spielberg. Once the summer break clears, the racing picks back up at Monza before heading straight to Madrid.
The final stretches of the year diverge slightly depending on the series. F2 acts as the sole supporting championship in Azerbaijan during September before both categories converge in Istanbul for the season-ending F3 round. F2 then caps off its global tour by visiting Mexico at the end of October, followed by late-season trips to Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali shared his thoughts on the announcement, stating: “The 2027 FIA Formula 2 calendar will deliver another exciting season of racing across 14 rounds at some of the most iconic and challenging venues in world motorsport, including the addition of Istanbul and Mexico City.” He added praise for the championship's role as the ultimate pathway to the top tier.
FIA Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel also weighed in on the logistics of expanding to four continents while keeping budgets intact. “I’m very excited to add three new venues in a financially sustainable way, with the return of Montreal following its surprise addition in 2026 and the first appearance of Istanbul and Mexico City,” Michel said, emphasizing that freight costs are being covered so teams are not hit financially by the new travel demands.
