And so, it’s onto Malaysia. Following a weather-affected Sunday that saw the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix race, the 2026 MotoGP title race thriller heading into this weekend’s PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia stands precisely where it left off after a barnstorming and dramatic Sprint at Phillip Island.
Only 10 points separate the top of the standings. Marc Marquez of the Ducati Lenovo Team sits as the leader, with a walking wounded Jorge Martin of Aprilia Racing chasing, and Marco Bezzecchi, also of Aprilia Racing, acting as the underdog. The setting for Round 19 is the wonderful Petronas Sepang International Circuit, which has served as the scene of many a clash and decisive showdown over the years.
The drama at Phillip Island left pre-Sprint championship leader Martin with a non-displaced fracture of his wrist after a tip-off. Officially, Aprilia Racing confirms the 2024 Champion hasn’t headed home to Spain for treatment and won’t undergo surgery, but whether he can race depends entirely on passing a fitness check on Thursday. That puts Marc Marquez firmly in the championship driving seat. Alongside an injured Martin, a 50-point lead over Bezzecchi shifts the momentum back into the reigning World Champion’s palms, even if Sepang is not one of his happier hunting grounds—holding just two MotoGP wins there from 2014 and 2018, alongside a Sprint P2 and a Sunday P12 following a crash in 2024.
On the other side of the Aprilia box sits Bezzecchi, an Italian rider who has never stood on the podium at Sepang across any class. Last year, Bezzecchi finished over 19 seconds away from winner Alex Marquez of BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP in P11, though different beasts are at play this year in both rider and manufacturer. Meanwhile, Aprilia Racing will also hope Raul Fernandez of the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team regains comfort in his fractured fingers, as he too must pass a medical check pre-weekend after withdrawing from the Australian GP. Teammate Ai Ogura led the RS-GP fleet home in last year's Grand Prix with a P10 finish.
Elsewhere, Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing were the 1-2 finishers at last year’s Malaysian Grand Prix. The #73 boasts a classy record in Sepang, including a Sprint win and Sunday P2 in 2023, a double P4 in 2024, and his 2019 Moto2 title victory. Acosta, who stated he has "no friends" in this fight, finished under eight seconds away from Alex Marquez last year and looks entirely capable of a second MotoGP win while remaining uninvolved in the title dynamic at the very top. Collecting a Sprint bronze medal in Australia was Fabio Di Giannantonio of the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team—marking his 10th podium across Sprints and GPs this season—while teammate Franco Morbidelli joined him inside the top six here last year. Previous Sepang winner Francesco Bagnaia of the Ducati Lenovo Team, who triumphed here in 2022 and 2024 and took pole and the Sprint win last year, searches for his lost front-end feeling. Unfortunately, Fermin Aldeguer remains sidelined with a fracture in his right hand, meaning 2026 WorldSBK runner-up Iker Lecuona will stand in for him at BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP.
Over at Honda HRC Castrol, a warm welcome back is expected for 2020 World Champion Joan Mir, who returns to the site of his most recent MotoGP podium after taking P3 last season, alongside teammate Luca Marini who finished P8. Johann Zarco of Castrol Honda LCR scored Sprint points here last year and remains a powerhouse if the forecast wet weather hits, while Diogo Moreira of Pro Honda LCR targets top 10s. In the KTM camp, Enea Bastianini of Red Bull KTM Tech3 won here in 2023 and took a podium in 2024 before finishing P7 last season. Brad Binder of Red Bull KTM Racing looks to continue a solid run of 12 Sunday points finishes in a row alongside a P6 Phillip Island Sprint, and Maverick Viñales of Red Bull KTM Tech3 searches for his first Sunday top 10 of an injury-ravaged season.
Yamaha also seeks gains as Jack Miller of Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP revs up for action after missing his home send-off. Last year, Fabio Quartararo of Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP led the manufacturer home in P5 while Miller and Alex Rins collected points. With Test Rider Augusto Fernandez of Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP filling in for the injured Toprak Razgatlioglu, important steps forward are expected in the V4 project. With 10 points and 50 points still on the line, the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia promises an unforgettable crescendo.
